The Finns were pagans, living under their own independent kings, till the twelfth century; about the middle of which Finland was conquered by the Swedes, who introduced Christianity. The province of Viborg was conquered and annexed to Russia by Peter the Great, in 1721. The remainder of the country became part of the Russian dominions (also by conquest) in 1809. see more - The Baltic Provinces Sears, Robert. An Illustrated Description of the Russian Empire.
